1/6. What is a standard?

A standard is a document that contains agreed rules, requirements, and guidelines for products, services, processes, or methods.

It helps to:

  • ensure quality and safety,
  • make communication and cooperation easier,
  • support research, development, and implementation.

Examples of use:

Electronics – standards determine which plugs and sockets are used in Poland (so all chargers fit).

IT – standards define file formats (e.g., PDF, JPEG) or internet protocols (e.g., TCP/IP) so computers from different makers can “communicate.”

Mobile phones – thanks to 4G/5G standards, your phone works in any network and country.

Everyday items – the A4 paper size is also a result of standardization (so every printer and binder is compatible).
